FSD-HSO Optimization Algorithm for Closed Fringes Interferogram Demodulation
Due to the physical nature of the interference phenomenon, extracting the phase of an interferogram is a known sinusoidal modulation problem. In order to solve this problem, a new hybrid mathematical optimization model for phase extraction is established. The combination of frequency guide sequential demodulation and harmony search optimization algorithms is used for demodulating closed fringes patterns in order to find the phase of interferogram applications. The proposed algorithm is tested in four sets of different synthetic interferograms, finding a range of average relative error in phase reconstructions of 0.14–0.39 rad. For reference, experimental results are compared with the genetic algorithm optimization technique, obtaining a reduction in the error up to 0.1448 rad. Finally, the proposed algorithm is compared with a very known demodulation algorithm, using a real interferogram, obtaining a relative error of 1.561 rad. Results are shown in patterns with complex fringes distribution
On the "Galactic Habitable Zone"
The concept of Galactic Habitable Zone (GHZ) was introduced a few years ago
as an extension of the much older concept of Circumstellar Habitable Zone.
However, the physical processes underlying the former concept are hard to
identify and even harder to quantify. That difficulty does not allow us, at
present, to draw any significant conclusions about the extent of the GHZ: it
may well be that the entire Milky Way disk is suitable for complex life.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, Invited talk in "Strategies for Life Detection"

Habitable Zones in the Universe
Habitability varies dramatically with location and time in the universe. This
was recognized centuries ago, but it was only in the last few decades that
astronomers began to systematize the study of habitability. The introduction of
the concept of the habitable zone was key to progress in this area. The
habitable zone concept was first applied to the space around a star, now called
the Circumstellar Habitable Zone. Recently, other, vastly broader, habitable
zones have been proposed. We review the historical development of the concept
of habitable zones and the present state of the research. We also suggest ways
to make progress on each of the habitable zones and to unify them into a single
concept encompassing the entire universe.Comment: 71 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; to be published in Origins of Life and

Challenging SO(10) SUSY GUTs with family symmetries through FCNC processes
We perform a detailed analysis of the SO(10) SUSY GUT model with D3 family
symmetry of Dermisek and Raby (DR). The model is specified in terms of 24
parameters and predicts, as a function of them, the whole MSSM set of
parameters at low energy scales. Concerning the SM subset of such parameters,
the model is able to give a satisfactory description of the quark and lepton
masses, of the PMNS matrix and of the CKM matrix. We perform a global fit to
the model, including flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) processes Bs -->
mu+ mu-, B --> Xs gamma, B --> Xs l+ l- and the B(d,s) - bar B(d,s) mass
differences Delta M(d,s) as well as the flavour changing (FC) process B+ -->
tau+ nu. These observables provide at present the most sensitive probe of the
SUSY mass spectrum and couplings predicted by the model. Our analysis
demonstrates that the simultaneous description of the FC observables in
question represents a serious challenge for the DR model, unless the masses of
the scalars are moved to regions which are problematic from the point of view
of naturalness and probably beyond the reach of the LHC. We emphasize that this
problem could be a general feature of SUSY GUT models with third generation
Yukawa unification and weak-scale minimal flavour violation.Comment: 1 + 37 pages, 5 figures, 11 tables. v3: minor typos fixed. Matches

Search for Decay
We have searched for the charmless hadronic decay of B0 mesons into two
neutral pions. Using 9.13fb^-1 taken at the Upsilon(4S) with the CLEO detector,
we obtain an improved upper limit for the branching fraction BR(B0-->pi0pi0) <
5.7*10^-6 at the 90% confidence level.Comment: pages postscript, also available through

Search for Zgamma events with large missing transverse energy in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV
We present the first search for supersymmetry (SUSY) in Zgamma final states
with large missing transverse energy using data corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 6.2 fb-1 collected with the D0 experiment in ppbar collisions at
sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. This signature is predicted in gauge-mediated SUSY-breaking
models, where the lightest neutralino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric
particle (NLSP) and is produced in pairs, possibly through decay from heavier
supersymmetric particles. The NLSP can decay either to a Z boson or a photon
and an associated gravitino that escapes detection. We exclude this model at
the 95% C.L. for SUSY breaking scales of Lambda < 87 TeV, corresponding to
neutralino masses of < 151 GeV.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Measurement of Leptonic Asymmetries and Top Quark Polarization in ttbar Production
We present measurements of lepton (l) angular distributions in ttbar -> W+ b
W- b -> l+ nu b l- nubar bbar decays produced in ppbar collisions at a
center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=1.96TeV, where l is an electron or muon. Using
data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4fb^-1, collected with the
D0 detector at the Fermilab Collider, we find that the angular distributions of
l- relative to anti-protons and l+ relative to protons are in agreement with
each other. Combining the two distributions and correcting for detector
acceptance we obtain the forward-backward asymmetry A^l_FB = (5.8 +- 5.1(stat)
+- 1.3(syst))%, compared to the standard model prediction of A^l_FB (predicted)
= (4.7 +- 0.1)%. This result is further combined with the measurement based on
the analysis of the l+jets final state to obtain A^l_FB = (11.8 +- 3.2)%.
Furthermore, we present a first study of the top-quark polarization.Comment: submitted versio

We present the first measurements of the differential cross section d sigma/dp(T)(gamma) for the production of an isolated photon in association with at least two b-quark jets. The measurements consider photons with rapidities vertical bar y(gamma)vertical bar < 1.0 and transverse momenta 30 < p(T)(gamma) < 200 GeV. The b-quark jets are required to have p(T)(jet) > 15 GeVand vertical bar y(jet)vertical bar < 1.5. The ratio of differential production cross sections for gamma + 2 b-jets to gamma + b-jet as a function of p(T)(gamma) is also presented. The results are based on the proton-antiproton collision data at root s = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measured cross sections and their ratios are compared to the next- to- leading order perturbative QCD calculations as well as predictions based on the k(T)- factorization approach and those from the sherpa and pythia Monte Carlo event generators
Search for Neutral Higgs Bosons in Events with Multiple Bottom Quarks at the Tevatron
The combination of searches performed by the CDF and D0 collaborations at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association
with b quarks is reported. The data, corresponding to 2.6 fb-1 of integrated
luminosity at CDF and 5.2 fb-1 at D0, have been collected in final states
containing three or more b jets. Upper limits are set on the cross section
multiplied by the branching ratio varying between 44 pb and 0.7 pb in the Higgs
boson mass range 90 to 300 GeV, assuming production of a narrow scalar boson.
Significant enhancements to the production of Higgs bosons can be found in
theories beyond the standard model, for example in supersymmetry. The results
are interpreted as upper limits in the parameter space of the minimal
supersymmetric standard model in a benchmark scenario favoring this decay mode.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
Measurement of the semileptonic charge asymmetry using Bs^0 -> D_s mu X decays
We present a measurement of the time-integrated flavor-specific semileptonic
charge asymmetry in the decays of Bs mesons that have undergone flavor mixing,
a^s_ls, using B_s^0 (barB_s^0) -> D_s^-/+ mu^+/- X decays, with D_s^-/+ -> phi
pi^-/+ and phi K^+ K^-, using 10.4 fb^-1 of proton-antiproton collisions
collected by the D0 detector during Run II at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. A
fit to the difference between the time-integrated D_s^-$ and D_s^+ mass
distributions of the B_s^0 and barB^0_s candidates yields the flavor-specific
asymmetry a^s_ls = [-1.12 pm 0.74 (stat) +/-0.17 (syst)]% which is the most
precise measurement and in agreement with the standard model prediction.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures (updated with changes made in journal review
